The Engine Room
Where your business needs — as a Design & Modular Specification — are engineered. And it starts with you: every situation is different.
Fifteen years designing a new generation of manufacturing machinery has made one thing clear — your business needs set the framework for the whole solution: your rate of return, and your short-, medium- and long-term goals. Our role, and one we take seriously, is to build that framework, and remove the engineering, technical and performance dead-ends before you ever reach them.
The word “specification” can suggest piles of paper and no progress. Ours are the opposite — concise, precise, and built to move you forward. Having them means you own the Blueprint; and because it’s vendor-independent, that Blueprint lasts for decades. It’s an investment — but once you hold it, progress and return accelerate exponentially.
In practice, we’re not writing your specification from scratch — we tailor an existing, proven specification to become your Blueprint. That’s exactly why it’s faster: it’s authored independent of any vendor, and it’s yours to keep — portable, re-tenderable, and built to last for decades.
Because the Template Specification is already written, and runs through the whole journey, Design · Specify · Source no longer wait on each other — they run in parallel, collapsing months into weeks and speeding the route from idea to a deployed line by orders of magnitude.
And it does more than collapse the timeline. Because the architecture is already defined in the Blueprint, it transforms Supplier Collaboration — the heart of what we do. Your suppliers no longer have to develop the architecture themselves: that takes the risk off their side and frees each of them to concentrate on what they do best, all building to one shared, proven standard.
Develop your own Automation Processes — and keep the IP
Fifteen years of these innovation programmes has taught us one thing: developed in-house, with structure, automation deploys in a fraction of the time — and the IP stays firmly in your hands.
Many manufacturers want to develop their automation and process concepts in-house — to keep control of the Key Manufacturing IP that sets them apart, and because no off-the-shelf solution fits. We’ve led exactly these programmes, and done with structure, in-house development carries real advantages and no genuine downside.
- Retain your Key Process IP — hard-won know-how stays in the building.
- No off-the-shelf constraint — build precisely what your process needs.
- Deploy in a fraction of the time — structure speeds it up by orders of magnitude.
- You choose your Equipment Suppliers — you select the partners that support your final Productisation and Scaling phases.
The alternative: hard-won know-how and IP walking out the door — and a far slower route to the line.
Digital + Physical + New Model = Adaptive Manufacturing
Digital and Physical Transformation only pay off with the third piece: a New Business Model. It begins with a vendor-neutral specification that unites the whole ecosystem — every vendor, tier and system — around one common structure. Investment phases in against proven returns instead of one big-bang bet, lock-in disappears, and the whole process speeds up. This is the room where that model is engineered. Three transformations, one connected ecosystem.
The Design-Benefit Specification
The Design-Benefit Specification is where your business case becomes a buildable, vendor-neutral blueprint — every requirement traceable to a benefit, and every benefit traceable to a supplier deliverable.
Most specifications are written to satisfy a compliance checklist. Ours are written to protect the value case. We take the benefits identified in your business and design case and turn them into a rigorous, GAMP 5-aligned document set that any competent supplier could build to — and, crucially, that no single supplier owns.
That last point is the whole game. Because we author your specification independently of any vendor, you own a portable, vendor-neutral blueprint — the difference between being locked to one integrator's way of doing things and being free to re-tender, swap a tier, or evolve the line as your products change. The specification is where modularity is won or lost.
- URS — User Requirements: throughput, product mix, changeover, regulatory obligations, the benefits you're buying.
- FDS — Functional Design: what the system must do to meet the URS — functions, interfaces, performance, safety and data.
- SDS — System / Software Design: how it is built and configured — the detail suppliers deliver against.
Each specification document has a matching qualification stage on the other arm of the V — IQ, OQ and PQ — so every requirement you write is a requirement you can later prove. Requirements flow down; verification flows back up; nothing is left to assumption.
From Specification to Suppliers
The specification is the shared yardstick — compare suppliers like-for-like.
A vendor-neutral specification changes the way you buy. Instead of accepting one supplier's proposal and hoping it fits, you put a single, unambiguous document in front of several — and compare them like for like, on price, capability and delivery, against your requirements rather than their brochure.
Because the specification belongs to you, not to a machine builder or integrator, you can select the best partner for each tier, hold every one to the same benchmark, and re-source later without starting again.
Rated against your requirements — not a brochure. One benchmark, judged the same way for all.

Design & Digital Twin (1/2)
Prioritised proposals linking each requirement to a solution — concept designs, cost-benefit and capital costings at area, cell and unit level. Digital Twin 1 & 2 let every stakeholder see and sign off the line before a penny is committed to steel.
Build, Integrate & Assure
Validation and compliance frameworks, quality and traceability systems, and the build and integration work — coordinated across your supply-chain partners so the parts arrive as one working line, not a set of boxes with gaps between them.
Advanced Solutions
Once the foundation is in place: analytics and AI integration, AGV/AMR and automated storage, Digital Twin 3 & 4 for continuous improvement, and full IIoT, supply-chain and consumer connectivity — added on, not retrofitted.
Safe by design, and safe to change
Modularity and safety have to be designed together — a line you can reconfigure is only an asset if it stays safe every time it changes. We build functional safety into the specification from the start, rather than bolting it on at the end.
- Machinery safety and risk assessment aligned to EN ISO 12100, EN ISO 13849 / IEC 62061.
- Safety functions specified to the right performance and integrity levels (PL / SIL).
- Standards-based guarding, interlocks, light curtains, safe-motion and e-stop across every modular cell.
Because the safety requirements live in your URS and FDS, they travel with the line. Swap a vendor or reconfigure a cell and the safety case doesn't have to be rebuilt — it's specified, traceable and ready to re-verify.
Get the order of operations right
The most common reason digital transformation stalls on the factory floor isn't the technology — it's sequence. Analytics, AI and MES compound beautifully on top of a modular, well-instrumented physical architecture, and struggle badly without one. Build the modular foundation first, then layer the digital capability it makes possible — kept vendor-neutral and standards-based (MQTT, ISA.95.88, OPC-UA, R.T Networks).
